Competitor vs. Hobbyist: Choosing the Right Training Path

One of the best things about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai is that there isn't just one way to train. Some students dream of stepping onto the competition mats, while others simply want to stay healthy, learn self-defense, and enjoy training after work. Both paths are valuable. The key is matching your training to your goals. And at Powell MMA and Fitness we have programming to help you do just that.
The Hobbyist
A hobbyist trains for enjoyment, fitness, stress relief, and personal growth. There is no pressure to compete, and progress is measured by consistency rather than medals.
A great schedule for most hobbyists is:
2-3 classes per week to build skills and stay active.
3-4 classes per week for faster improvement while maintaining a healthy balance with work and family.
With regular attendance, hobbyists can make tremendous progress without feeling overwhelmed.
The Competitor
Competitors prepare with a different objective. Every class has a purpose, and training becomes more structured around improving performance.
A typical competition schedule includes:
5-6 technique classes per week
1-2 sparring or competition-focused sessions
2-3 strength and conditioning workouts
Mobility, recovery, and good nutrition
Competition training requires consistency, discipline, and a willingness to push beyond your comfort zone.
Which Path Is Right for You?
There is no "better" path. Some members never compete and become incredibly skilled.
Others love testing themselves in tournaments and enjoy the challenge of preparing for competition.
Many students even switch between the two throughout their journey, training recreationally most of the year and increasing their workload when preparing for a tournament.
At Powell MMA, we support both goals. Whether you're looking to train a few evenings each week for fun or you're preparing for your next competition, our coaches will help you train with purpose and make steady progress.
The only requirement is showing up. Everything else is built one class at a time. Book your first 2 free intro classes today and get your journey started.
